Hot Tub Circulating Pumps
All hot tubs have pumps to move water, everyone knows this. Most of the pumps range in size from two horsepower to seven horsepower. Some tubs will have as many as five pumps in them. These pumps running use large amounts of electricity costing lots of money. What I am going to tell you about is a pump that can actually save you money. A circulating pump. This pump basically runs your tub. It does all the work at a fraction of the cost of the larger pumps in the tub.
In a hot tub there will be one to five large pumps one of which will be responsible for filtering and heating the water. So this means that depending on the filter cycle you choose, that pump will run anywhere from four to twenty hours a day. Also during the time your tub is not filtering it may need to heat. This means that pump will turn on again to maintain the desired temperature. So this means that you could have a two horsepower up to a seven horsepower pump running up to almost twenty-four hours a day. That will be very expensive.
A circulating pump is made to do one thing, operate twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year. Now that may sound no different or worse than the large pump, except for one thing. A circulating pump is usually anywhere from 1/16 horsepower to a ¼ horsepower. The difference between a five horsepower pump and a ¼ horsepower pump is that a ¼ horsepower pump is twenty times smaller than the five. Which do you think cost less to run?
Saving money isn’t the only reason to buy a hot tub with a circulating pump. Water quality will also be better with one. Without a circ pump you program a large pump to turn on and filter a certain number of hours each day. With a circ pump your tub is always filtering, your ozonater is always on, and the water is always moving so it never sits and becomes stagnant. This means moving water, filtering, and cleaning at a fraction of the cost of tubs without circulating pumps.
When you go to purchase a new hot tub talk to the dealer, remember this information, and find the tub that’s right for you.
